The past week has shown little activity on the Aurora radar. I set my camera at the sky and a passing car with an extra long shutter speed, and, lo and behold, there was a hint of Aurora activity. It wasn't visible to the naked eye, but I took it as a sign of better things to come. It wasn't.

The lakes are still wet.

A common practice in shooting the Northern lights is to set your camera in the middle of a frozen lake to get access to an expansive sky. Its one way to get away from the many tall trees that dominate the landscape. I, however, rather like trees. I'd also get my camera wet. The lakes don't usually freeze until October.

A soft and more subtle Aurora presence in the sky. There was very little movement, appearing more like a green haze. In times like these the Northern Lights are hardly worth photographing in isolation. Instead it is the setting that needs to drive the picture.

Some great activity earlier in the evening according to atmospheric observations. But, still too much light (from the sun) hanging around to get a visual. The sky is suitably dark after 10pm. Lucky for us there were still some Northern Light activity available for us to photograph.

There are a good few hours of darkness available now for the Northern Lights to shine. It wasn't a particularly active night, but enough for the camera to pick up on. The moon provided a nice source of light for the foreground. A nice gentle start to the Northern Light season.

    Arctic Blog

Our blog has become an almost daily diary for Arctic Frontier. See the changing seasons, check out the aurora conditions and click on our archive to get an idea of what to expect when you come to Levi.

We share moments of our lives, some photography tips and reveal the beauty of the Arctic environment that we live in.

The photographs show the time of season, and most images are taken near the time of the post. The pictures highlight not only the beauty of the Northern Lights, but also the landscape they shine upon.
