Smoke from the heating station provides an interesting contrast to the lights falling above. This was from an unplanned early morning shoot. A cloudy evening (and forecast) had sent me to bed early. Waking early, I noticed the clouds had cleared and the lights were active. The Arctic has taught me that you make the most of the conditions when you can. The weather is always liable to rapid change.

Another evening that deserves two entries. I remember one point in the evening when I simply stopped shooting. The display of light was just too awesome. I knew pictures wouldn't be able to capture what I saw. It seemed as if the lights were in touching distance.

Every now and then you can get lucky with a shooting star. An extra long exposure here and there improves your chances.

This is the weather station at Sammal Fell. I was attracted to the sites initially because it is renowned for measuring the cleanest air in Europe. Clean air and clear skies are the ideal combo for Northern Lights. The evening did not disappoint. The banner picture for this website was shot on the same evening.

Sammal Fell is 565m above sea level.

We had such a great time shooting that evening that I think the day deserves two entries.

Its often said that its best to shoot the Northern Lights away from the artificial light of towns and villages. But, if the Aurora is suitably strong enough the spill of artificial lights can be used to creatively manage your foreground. This evening the atmosphere  peaked at over 500 nT/sec of measured magnetic disturbance.

The evening began with only minor Aurora activity. But, since the sky was clear, we stuck around to see how the night would progress. Our patience paid off.

The week continued to deliver very little Aurora activity. Normally the red values in the Northern Lights emerge in moments of strong activity. This was not one of those occasions. This is instead lens flare from the tail lights of a passing car. They complement the Aurora quite effectively.
