When driving through the Arctic landscape I'm occasionally reminded of Australia. While the picture of the winter landscape sits in stark contrast to the Australian outback, it does however harbour that same sense of space, tranquility and solitude.

Aurora activity is mild.

The landscape is settling into the winter. The longer nights are not a hindrance to photography however. The snow reflects so much of the ambient light. After a cold snap the temperature feels almost balmy.

Aurora activity is zero.

With the clearing cloud comes the colder weather. The trolls on top of the fells are enjoying the cold snap.

Aurora activity is close to zero.

The wider range of colours in the sky suggest the clouds are thinning. If the forecast holds true we will have some clear sky on the weekend.

Aurora activity is sporadic.

Terry Alderman and Jackson Pollock

I can see some clear skies appearing in the long range weather forecast, finally putting an end to what has been an unusually long cloudy spell. Terry Alderman would have enjoyed these overcast conditions. And the season is just right for Jackson Pollock landscape interpretations.

Aurora activity is modest.

Aurora activity is low. The clouds are more than welcome to stay in such circumstances. In snowy conditions they make your exposure metering very easy.

The weather continues to work against us for aurora photography. However, its not much of a loss when the landscape is turning into a winter wonderland before our eyes,
This is still one of my favourite times of the year. Each day has its own character.

The snow is forecast to continue for the next few days. Time to prepare the skis.

In Defence of Clouds

A great evening for the Northern Lights - lots of activity from 8pm until well past midnight. The only problem - its all hidden behind a blanket of cloud.

At times like these you give thanks for all the great things clouds provide: rain, snow, colour, tone, detail, patterns and William Turner.

Sun Dogs

Here's us getting our skates on for the first time two days ago. Some of us still need a bit of practice.

No sign of a break in the clouds. Looks like we will be settling in for the arrival of winter with snow forecast for the rest of the week. The aurora activity has settled down to minor levels so it doesn't feel like we're missing out on too much. And there is still plenty to enjoy and do in the early days of winter.

The halo in the picture is a sun dog caused by light refracting off small ice crystals floating in the air.

Clouds are great for providing extra detail to the sky when the Northern Lights are shining, but they can also quickly mask them. Unfortunately, it looks like a full cloud cover will be settling in for the next few days. Getting an aeroplane above the cloud line is the only way you are going to get to see them at the moment. We'll be monitoring the forecast closely for a break in the weather since there is still plenty of aurora activity on the radar.

    Arctic Blog

Our blog has become an almost daily diary for Arctic Frontier. See the changing seasons, check out the aurora conditions and click on our archive to get an idea of what to expect when you come to Levi.

We share moments of our lives, some photography tips and reveal the beauty of the Arctic environment that we live in.

The photographs show the time of season, and most images are taken near the time of the post. The pictures highlight not only the beauty of the Northern Lights, but also the landscape they shine upon.
